Tony Burdett, Colin Wisbey and Andrew Marchant of the FML Ecology Group installed three bat boxes at Great Elm on 31st January. The boxes were provided by Sustrans as part of the ecology/greenway improvements to the Collier’s Way. It would be interesting to hear the first report of a bat flying near them, so get in touch if you do happen to see one!

Other work done at Great Elm this autumn and winter includes hedgelaying and scything of grass areas to promote wildflowers in the Spring. It is planned shortly to sow some yellow rattle at Great Elm bench after Sustrans have provided the seed. Yellow rattle is semi parasitic on grass and this should weaken the grass to provide space for more wildflowers.
